Documentation – Andiamo Places

This documentation covers all three versions of Andiamo Places: the web app in Desktop mode, the web app in Mobile mode, and the iOS/Android mobile app. All three share nearly identical features and menus. Where steps or features differ by platform, they are noted inline:

The web app runs in two different layouts based on screen size. On large screens (Desktop mode) the Itinerary, Places, Map, and Schedule panels are all visible simultaneously — no navigation required. On small screens (Mobile mode) one panel is shown at a time. Steps below use platform-neutral phrasing ("In the Map screen", "Open Library") that applies to all three versions.

01 Overview
A – Terminology
Trip / Guide

The terms Trip and Guide are used interchangeably. Both describe possible things to do and places to see with optional schedules.

Travel Journal

Travel journals document what was actually done and seen on a trip at specific times. For examples they will contain your photos and your notes.

Destination

Destinations are places a guide is about, e.g. a city, multiple cities, a country, etc.

Places

The term "Place" refers generically to locations, paths, and areas. All three appear together in the Places list.

Locations

Locations are points on the map, e.g. hotel, attraction, etc.

Paths

Paths are lines on a map, e.g. walking or driving routes.

Areas

Areas are polygons on a map that define a region, e.g. neighborhoods.

Groups & Categories

Groups and categories together help to categorize places and enable searching and filtering. By convention, a group is at a higher level (e.g. neighborhood) and a category at a lower level (e.g. restaurant). You can think of categories as sub-groups. A place can have multiple groups and multiple categories.

Event

An event is an activity with a start and end date and time. An event can have multiple places and HTML notes, and belongs to a specific schedule.

Schedule

A guide has one default schedule called "Main"; additional schedules can be added. Each schedule contains one or more events.

Itinerary

The Itinerary displays HTML content. See section on "Guide Mode" for mor details.

Chapters & Sections

Sections contain store HTML content that can be linked from HTML in the guide. Chapters are folders for organizing sections.

Guide Mode

A guide itinerary can be in either Mosaic mode or Custom mode. In Mosaic mode the app automatically populates it with a mosaic of photos representing groups and/or schedules. Clicking on a photo displays a photo mosaic of all of the places associated with that group or schedule. Clicking on a place photo zooms the map to that location. In Custom mode the itinerary is editable and can contain any HTML content. It is typically used to display an HTML version of the schedule.

Guest User

As a guest user you can view guides and travel journals for free, but cannot create, copy, save, or rate guides. No registration or login is required, and you are not obligated to buy anything or view ads.

Logged-In User

As a logged-in user you can view, create, copy, save, and rate guides in addition to all guest capabilities.

Content Owner

A content owner is anyone who creates a guide or journal from scratch or by copying an existing guide. They can modify and share their content freely.

B – Quick Tour
  1. Andiamo Places lets anyone create travel guides and travel journals for free, which is useful for planning, execution, archiving, and sharing trips.
  2. When you first launch the app you are in Guest Mode. As a guest you can view and edit locally, but changes are lost on restart.
  3. To gain full functionality (save to cloud, create guides, copy guides) register and log in for free.
  4. The top navigation bar shows Itinerary, Places, Map, Schedule, and Menu tabs. In Desktop mode all panels are visible simultaneously so those tabs are not necessary; in Mobile mode and the mobile app this bar is always visible at the top of the screen, so you can switch between them from anywhere — including Library, Wanderlist, and You.
  5. The Itinerary screen is the home screen — editable HTML, commonly used as a table of contents.
  6. The Places screen lists all places. Filter, sort, or add places from here.
  7. The Map screen displays places on a map. Add places, search for new ones, and interact with the map.
  8. The Schedule screen shows events for the selected schedule.
C – Navigation

For mobile and web mobile mode, the top navigation bar contains:

  1. Itinerary — the guide's main itinerary page
  2. Places — the list of places in the guide
  3. Map — the map of places in the guide
  4. Schedule — the schedule of events in the guide
  5. Menu — full main menu (create, edit, import, export, share, and more)

For Web Mobile mode and the mobile app the bottom navigation bar contaains:

  1. Library — browse guides: Viewed (recently viewed), My Guides, Featured, or Shared
  2. Wanderlist — view your visited-places statistics and world map
  3. How-To — the command palette; see Search below
  4. You — account, profile, settings, sign in, and sign out

For web desktop mode, the top navigation bar contains:

  1. Itinerary — the guide's main itinerary page
  2. Wanderlist — statistics on the guide and bucket list
  3. Library — guides to select from
  4. How-To — AI assisted how-to
  5. You — registration,login, settings
  6. Menu — full main menu (create, edit, import, export, share, and more)

In Desktop mode all four panels (Itinerary, Places, Map, Schedule) are displayed simultaneously — no tapping is required to switch between them.

02 Login
A – Guest Mode

If you are not logged in you are in guest mode. As a guest you can do nearly everything a logged-in user can, but nothing that requires saving to the cloud — Save guide, Copy guide, New guide, and Review guide all require login.

B – Register

You do not need to register to view guides. To create and save your own guides you must register and then log in.

C – Sign in

Before you can log in you need to register. Login is required to create and save guides.

D – Sign out

You can log out for additional security. Tap the You tab and then tap "Sign out". The app remembers login status across restarts.

E – Reset Password

If you forget your password, tap the You tab and then tap "Reset Password".

F – User Details

Tap the You tab to see your profile: user id, email, first name, and last name.

G – Settings

Open YouSettings to set preferences including distance unit, date format, edit mode, and advanced mode.

H – Advanced Mode

Advanced Mode controls how many menu items you see. It defaults to Off (Basic), which hides less-common and more technical actions — bulk edits, KML/KMZ/GPX/TCX import-export, custom map markers, multi-schedule management, and similar — so newer users see a shorter, simpler set of menus. Turning it On reveals the full menus, including everything covered elsewhere in this documentation. Nothing is removed or disabled when Advanced Mode is off — the underlying data and guide are unaffected, only which menu items are shown.

You can toggle it from Settings.

03 Screens
Welcome Screen

The Welcome Screen displays when you launch the guide and you are not logged in. This screen has options for "Create a trip with AI" (the fully-automated AI trip generator), "Browse featured guides", "Plan with AI assist" (the guided New Guide Wizard — destination, then optional AI-suggested places, schedule, and info/opening-hours enrichment), "or start with a blank guide" (skips the wizard entirely), and "Sign In".

Itinerary / Home Screen

Depending on Guide mode the Home screen can either be a Mosaic of photos auto created by the app or user-customizable HTML. Common uses: table of contents, main journal content. HTML here can link to other HTML via section links.

Places Screen

Contains a list of all places (including paths and areas). Filter by text, sort, and add places.

Map Screen

Displays places on a map. Filter by text, add places, search for new places, and interact with the map.

Schedule Screen

Displays events for the selected schedule. Events can be filtered by text; new events can be added and existing events modified.

Library Screen

Displays different types of Guides that can be downloaded, i.e. Viewed, Mine, Featured and Shared.

Wanderlist

Displays Statistics on places, countries and continents visited. Also displays the bucket list.

You

Displays account information and sign in/sign out buttons.

04 How To

Search

Search for a Command
  1. Tap How-To on the bottom navigation bar (Mobile mode and mobile app) to open the command palette.
  2. Type what you want to do, e.g. "add place" or "export video". Matching actions appear as you type — tap one to run it immediately.
  3. The list only shows actions available in your current mode — Advanced-only actions won't appear unless Advanced Mode is on.
  4. If nothing matches right away, wait a moment: an AI-assisted search runs automatically and suggests likely matches even if your wording doesn't exactly match a menu label.
  5. Tap the microphone icon to search by voice instead of typing — speak your request, and the transcribed text is searched the same way as if you'd typed it.
Ask AI a Question
  1. If neither the direct search nor the AI-assisted suggestions find a matching action, an "Ask AI" option appears with your typed question.
  2. Tap it to get a plain-language answer, generated from this documentation — including step-by-step instructions when the question is about how to do something in the app.
  3. This is meant for "how do I…" questions about using the app. For travel questions about a destination — best time to visit, local dishes, attractions, and so on — use the Travel Wizard in the Main Menu instead.

Places Screen -> Places Menu

Build Trip from Places

The equivalent of "Build My Trip," for when you'd rather choose the places yourself. Pick which places to include (all are pre-selected by default) — the selection's implied destination(s) are shown back to you (e.g. "Paris, France (12) · Rome, Italy (5)"), and used to suggest a schedule name. Choose an exact Start and End date/time, and the places are ordered by travel distance and fit into that window with the same opening-hours-aware scheduling "Build My Trip" uses, respecting each day's start/end hours from Guide Settings. Can target a brand-new schedule or append onto an existing one — this single action replaces the old separate "Create Events From Places" (manual pick, no options) and the need to separately run "Recalculate Schedule" afterward. Can also generate/update the guide's itinerary from the result (same as "Copy to Trip Itinerary" on the Schedule menu — works for any schedule, not just Main), and optionally look up Wikipedia info and opening hours for the selected places afterward.

  1. In the Places screen
  2. Tap the 3-dot horizontal menu in the Places header
  3. Tap "Build Trip from Places"
  4. Uncheck any places you don't want included
  5. Tap "Done"
  6. Choose "Create new schedule" (and optionally rename it) or pick an existing schedule to add to
  7. Choose a Start and End date/time
  8. Optionally adjust Pace, "Remove places that don't fit," "Update itinerary to match the schedule," and the "Add more detail" lookups
  9. Tap "Build"

Personalize Guide with Photos

Replaces the old separate "Use My Photos", "Add Photos to Places", and "Search Places from Photos" actions with one matching pass. Photos near an existing place (by GPS proximity) become candidates for that place's cover photo and/or its notes; photos not near any existing place are grouped into brand-new places, clearly marked "NEW" in the review dialog. An optional base name (e.g. "Japan") can be given to the new places, producing "Japan_1", "Japan_2", etc. — deduplicated against every place already in the guide, including ones from earlier runs of this same feature.

  1. In the Places screen
  2. Tap the 3-dot horizontal menu in the Places header
  3. Tap "Content"

Fix an Opening Hours Conflict

An event scheduled at a time when its place appears to be closed shows an orange warning icon next to its time. Tapping it opens the exact reason — "Closed all day," "Opens at [time]," or "Closes at [time]" — with concrete fixes instead of just pointing at the place's opening hours and leaving you to work out a new time by hand.

  1. In the Schedule screen, look for the orange warning icon next to an event's time
  2. Tap the icon
  3. Choose a fix — whichever apply to this conflict:
    • Push start to [time], keep the same end time — only offered when the place opens later that same day
    • Move end to [time], keep the same start time — only offered when the place closes before the event ends
    • Swap or replace — opens a picker with two lists: events elsewhere in the schedule (any day) whose place would also be fine at this event's time, and vice versa (swapping); and unused places already in the guide whose hours fit this event's time as-is (replacing this event's place with one of them, one-way — the event's own time doesn't change). Swapping is the only fix available for a place that's closed all day, since no time that day can work; replacing is available whenever a suitable unused place exists, conflict or not
    • View this place's opening hours — falls back to the place's Opening Hours editor directly, same as before

Swap or Replace Event

Trade this event's start and end time with another event's, or replace this event's place with one that's in the guide but not yet used in any schedule — available any time, not just when this event has an opening hours conflict (see "Fix an Opening Hours Conflict" above, whose "Swap or replace" option uses the same underlying picker). Swap candidates are limited to events whose place would also be fine at this event's time, and vice versa, so a free-form swap can't accidentally put a place into a slot where it'd then be closed. Replace candidates are limited to unused places whose hours already fit this event's time — the event's own time never changes when replacing.

  1. In the Schedule screen
  2. Tap the three-dot menu on an event
  3. Tap "Swap or Replace Event"
  4. Tap "Swap or replace"
  5. Tap a compatible event to swap times with it, or an unused place to replace this event's place with it

Build My Trip

The fast, non-AI way to create a trip: real Google Places (or, optionally, AI-suggested places), an opening-hours-aware schedule, and optional info/opening-hours enrichment — from a guide's Destinations list.

  1. Tap Menu in the top navigation bar
  2. Tap "Create & Edit"
  3. Tap "Build My Trip"
  4. Review the destination(s) shown (from the guide's saved Destinations); tap "Edit Destinations" to add, remove, or change them — see "Destinations" below
  5. Choose where this goes: a new guide, add to this guide, or replace this guide
  6. Choose how places should be chosen: automatically, or let you pick from real candidates on the Places screen
  7. Optionally open "Show advanced options" for places source (real Google places vs. AI suggestions), pace, departure padding, removing places that don't fit, and looking up extra info/opening hours
  8. Tap Create
Destinations

A guide's list of destinations (city, country, and dates) is its own persisted, editable list — independent of Build My Trip or Create Trip w/AI, both of which read from it.

  1. Tap Menu in the top navigation bar
  2. Tap "Create & Edit"
  3. Tap "Destinations"
  4. Tap "Add Destination" to enter one manually, tap "Paste Destinations" to enter several at once as text, tap "Destinations from Schedule" to derive them from the current guide's existing schedule (review the suggested list and uncheck any you don't want), tap "Import Confirmation Email" to derive them from a pasted airline/hotel confirmation, or tap "Explore Destinations" (see below) if you only know the country and how long you're traveling
  5. Toggle "No Place" on a destination for a placeholder day (e.g. a sea day or travel day) with no city
  6. Reorder, edit dates, or remove any destination
  7. Tap Save — if the guide has no places yet, you'll be offered to find places automatically (Build My Trip) or pick them yourself
Create Trip w/AI

Let the AI generate a complete guide with places and schedule based on your destination(s) and preferences, using the same Destinations list as Build My Trip.

  1. Tap Menu in the top navigation bar
  2. Tap "Create & Edit"
  3. Tap "Create Trip w/AI"
  4. Review the destination(s) shown; tap "Edit Destinations" to add, remove, or change them — see "Destinations" above
  5. Set dates and preferences
  6. Tap Create
Explore Destinations

For when you know a country (or a few) and roughly how long the trip is, but not yet which cities to visit. Suggests a set of popular cities, puts them in a sensible visiting order, and splits your available days between them — all editable before you commit to it. Reached from "Destinations".

  1. Tap "Explore Destinations"
  2. Pick one or more countries
  3. Set the arrival and departure date/time
  4. Optionally set a suggested number of nights per city — just a starting point, freely adjustable afterward
  5. Optionally turn on "Dates are flexible" if you'd rather lengthen or shorten the whole trip when adjusting a city's nights, instead of taking nights from another city
  6. Optionally pin a starting and/or ending city, e.g. to match an already-booked arrival or departure flight
  7. Tap "Generate" — a candidate list of cities appears, ordered by distance, with nights already split between them
  8. Uncheck any city you don't want, or use "Add City" to bring in one that wasn't suggested
  9. Edit a city's night count directly — if more than one other city is still selected, you'll be asked which one to take the nights from (or give them to, if lowering the count)
  10. Use the swap icon to replace a city with a different one in the same country, the arrows to reorder the list, or the trash icon to remove one
  11. Tap "Use Selected" to replace the destination list with your edited selection, or "Back" to change the countries/dates and regenerate
Create Walks, Bike Routes, and Hikes using AI

Use AI to generate walk, bike, or hike routes with POI markers for a city or area.

  5. Optionally set distance range and starting place
  6. Tap "Create"
  7. Review the suggested routes
  8. Check the routes you want to add
  9. Tap "Add Selected"
Create Journal from Photos

Automatically generate a photo journal from your trip photos stored in Andiamo cloud or Google Drive. Also reachable directly from the Welcome Screen's "Create a journal from photos" button. If the guide already has places in it, the wizard offers a link to "Personalize Guide with Photos" instead, since that flow is built for adding photos to an existing guide rather than building one from scratch.

  1. Tap Menu in the top navigation bar
  2. Tap "Create & Edit"
  3. Tap "Create Journal from Photos"
  4. Tap "Select Photos"
  5. Choose source: Andiamo cloud or Google Drive
  6. Select the photos
  7. Tap "Done"
  8. Adjust the grouping distance if needed — the review list updates live
  9. Optionally enter a base name for the new places, e.g. "Japan" produces "Japan_1", "Japan_2", etc. — deduplicated against every place already in the guide
  10. Uncheck any photo to leave it out, tap the star to change a cluster's cover photo, use ✂ to split a photo into its own place, or merge a stray one into the place above it
  11. Tap "Create"
  12. Save the guide to the cloud
Create a New Guide

Start a brand-new empty guide named "New Guide", then walk through the New Guide Wizard to set a destination and optionally find places. Available to guests as well as signed-in users — the guide is only created in memory at this point, so nothing is written to the cloud until you actually save it (or, for guests, until you sign in).

  1. Tap Menu in the top navigation bar
  2. Tap "Create & Edit"
  3. Tap "Plan with AI assist"
  4. Confirm to discard any unsaved changes to the current guide
  5. Follow the New Guide Wizard (see below), or tap "Skip" at any step to go straight to the empty guide
New Guide Wizard

A short, fully skippable wizard that runs after creating a new guide (from the Welcome Screen's "Plan with AI assist" or the Create & Edit menu's "Plan with AI assist"). You can back out to plain manual editing at any step. Destination picking is country-first: pick a country before a specific city, so the wizard can immediately offer a curated list of that country's popular cities to choose from instead of requiring you to already know exactly where you're going.

  1. Pick a countryWeb shown as a dropdown; App opens a full-screen searchable country list instead
  2. If the country has a curated list of popular cities, pick one from that list, or tap "Type a different city…" to enter one by hand. Countries without curated cities skip straight to typing
  3. A typed city is checked against a real place together with the chosen country — if it can't be found, you're asked to re-enter it. A city picked from the curated list needs no such check
  4. Choose whether you want a list of favorite sites. Choosing "No" ends the wizard here
  5. If "Yes", an AI search for top attractions in your destination runs automatically and shows only a progress indicator (not the full AI Search dialog); you're taken to the Places screen once it finishes (or if you close it early)
  6. Tap the green "+" on any search-result place card to add it to your guide; results and bulk Add All/Clear actions are shown in a banner at the top of the Places list. Web A floating "Pick your places, then tap here when you're done" prompt stays on screen — tap "Done" to continue to the next step, or the "x" to skip. App The wizard ends here once the AI search finishes; there is no floating "Done" prompt and no automatic next step.
  7. Web Optionally build a schedule from the places you added, ordered by travel distance, starting the next day and fit to each day's start/end hours from Guide Settings, as part of the wizard. App This isn't a wizard step — from the Places screen menu, tap "Build Schedule from Guide Places" at any time afterward to do the same thing.
  8. Web Optionally look up extra info for the places you added: check "Auto add info to Notes" for a Wikipedia summary and link per place, and/or "Add opening times" for Google's weekly hours — both run as one combined pass with a live progress indicator, and can be skipped entirely or stopped partway through.

Refresh Guide

Discard any unsaved local changes and restore the last cloud-saved version of the guide. Only shown for a guide that's actually been saved to the cloud — a brand-new guide (or one just cleared via "Clear local Guide Content") has nothing to reload from, so this option is hidden until the guide has a real cloud copy.
